The first woman to combine rap and rock in a Brazilian work, Brasília-based artist Dona Gi is releasing the EP Negritude Dona Gi this Friday (September 19th). The album is now available on digital platforms (listen here) and combines street rhymes with the weight of guitars to give voice to a narrative that is simultaneously personal and collective. The EP’s six tracks reflect the artist’s journey—a Black woman from the outskirts of the city and a single mother—and feature sharp lyrics, born of pain and overcoming, combined with a heavy groove and distorted riffs. “Negritude Dona Gi is about showing that our place is wherever we want to be, including mixing rap with rock,” says the artist, whose birth name is Gisele da Silva Souza.
Produced through the Aldir Blanc National Policy, the EP represents a milestone in the artist’s career. In a scenario where only 8% of rappers on digital platforms are women (data from ONErpm/Itaú Cultural), the project emerges as an affirmation of identity and survival. “For single mothers like me, this incentive isn’t just a resource, it’s a lifeline. It’s the recognition that our art matters,” adds Dona Gi. Music that spans generations The power of Negritude Dona Gi isn’t limited to streaming. Starting in October, the artist will bring her music and message to public schools in Samambaia, in lectures and performances that aim to inspire young people to reflect on representation, gender equality, and the transformative role of hip-hop culture.

La artista brasileña Dona Gi, primera mujer en combinar rap y rock en una obra brasileña, lanza este viernes (19 de septiembre) el EP Negritude Dona Gi. El álbum ya está disponible en plataformas digitales (escúchalo aquí) y combina rimas callejeras con el peso de las guitarras para dar voz a una narrativa personal y colectiva a la vez. Los seis temas del EP reflejan la trayectoria de la artista —una mujer negra de las afueras de la ciudad y madre soltera— y presentan letras agudas, nacidas del dolor y la superación, combinadas con un groove potente y riffs distorsionados. “Negritude Dona Gi trata de demostrar que nuestro lugar está donde queramos estar, incluyendo la mezcla de rap y rock”, afirma la artista, cuyo nombre de nacimiento es Gisele da Silva Souza. Producido a través de la Política Nacional Aldir Blanc, el EP representa un hito en la carrera de la artista. En un escenario donde solo el 8% de los raperos en plataformas digitales son mujeres (datos de ONErpm/Itaú Cultural), el proyecto surge como una afirmación de identidad y supervivencia. “Para madres solteras como yo, este incentivo no es solo un recurso, es un salvavidas. Es el reconocimiento de que nuestro arte importa”, añade Dona Gi. Música que trasciende generaciones. El poder de la negritud de Dona Gi no se limita al streaming. A partir de octubre, la artista llevará su música y su mensaje a las escuelas públicas de Samambaia, en conferencias y presentaciones que buscan inspirar a los jóvenes a reflexionar sobre la representación, la igualdad de género y el papel transformador de la cultura hip-hop.
